For more than three decades, Boston Dynamics’ innovations have inspired young minds. But with the commercial availability of Spot, the next generation of engineers, technicians, roboticists, and innovators is now getting hands-on in the classroom. Spot is increasingly a key part of curriculums at universities, colleges, and high schools around the world. We are joined by faculty from Central High School in Louisville, Kentucky where, since arriving in 2021, Spot has been the center of their STEM program.

About the Presenters

Ed Colp

Sales Lead, Academia and Research

Boston Dynamics

Ed is the lead sales representative for Boston Dynamics customers in academia and research. For the past three years, he has worked with researchers and educators to enable and expand their use of legged robots. Ed works closely with researchers exploring applications from applied research with industry or government partners to custom software or payload integration, as well as customers using Spot as a teaching platform.

Jim Gilbert

Teacher

Central High School

Jim graduated from Louisville Southern High School in 1982. After working 15 years as a retail manager, he finished out his Master’s degree at the University of Louisville School Of Education with a concentration in secondary English education. He has been teaching at Central since 1999, attaining a National Board Certification in English/Language Arts. He established the AP Language and Composition program at Central. A life-long tinkerer and unabashed tech-geek, Gilbert started the Louisville Centrons robotics team in 2015, and has coached the team to two state and one international championships. He has attained NICERC technical certification in robotics and cyber security and an educational endorsement in instructional technology at UofL. He has served on the local boards of the Hugh O’Brian Youth Foundation, the BSA Sea Scouts, and the Central/UofL Innovation partnership.

Chris Brown

Teacher

Central High School

Chris is a computer science teacher at Central High School in Louisville, Kentucky. Over his 16 year career, he has sponsored and advocated for robotics programs and STEM educational opportunities in urban school districts.
